  • Scientific Director
plant organ growth and crop productivity His work has opened up new perspectives for the identification of optimal growth regulatory networks that can be selected by advanced breeding or for which more robust variants can be obtained through genetic engineering As such Dirk Inzé s work significantly contributes to providing food security for the growing world population Dirk Inzé graduated in 1979 at Ghent University where he also received his PhD in 1984 In 1990 he was appointed Research Director of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research INRA where he initiated highly successful research programs on the cell cycle and growth control in plants In 1995 he became Professor at Ghent University Dirk Inzé was the scientific founder of the biotechnology company CropDesign which was established in 1998 and acquired in 2006 by BASF In 2002 Dirk Inzé was appointed Director of the Department of Plant Systems Biology of the VIB Under his directorship the VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology currently employing 300 persons became one of the world leading centers for advanced plant sciences In 1994 Dirk Inzé was laureate of the Körber Stiftung Prize Germany and in 2003 he became EMBO member Later in 2005 he was laureate of the Belgium Francqui Prize He was awarded the prestigious five yearly Doctor A De Leeuw Damry Bourlart Prize for Exact Sciences in 2010 In 2013 he received an ERC Advanced grant He published more than 500 peer reviewed articles that received 38 000 citations H index 106 July 2015 making him one of the most influential plant scientists Dirk Inzé has served on numerous scientific committees editorial boards and international science advisory boards and has been an invited speaker at more than 150 internationally renowned conferences In 2012 he became the Chair of the Life Sciences Environmental

  • History
discovery that the TIP resided on an extrachromosomal element the Ti plasmid Subsequently the close collaboration between the teams of Jeff Schell and Marc Van Montagu created the fertile environment for combining genetic and molecular approaches to unravel the molecular processes involved in the transformation of plant cells by Agrobacterium These research efforts culminated in the early 80s with the demonstration that the Agrobacterium mediated transformation process could be developed into a system that allowed genetical engineering of plants Plant engineering became the driving force for the rapid growth of the laboratory Under the inspiring guidance of Marc Van Montagu the research group rapidly gained a worldwide reputation as a center of excellence in the field of plant biology The research interests of the group continuously expanded covering many different areas such as plant microbe interactions transgene technology biotic and abiotic stress cell division control hormone signaling metabolic pathways and tree biotechnology to name just a few In 1995 the laboratory was integrated into the newly created Flanders Interuniversitary Institute for Biotechnology VIB and renamed Department of Plant Genetics The generous funding provided by the VIB allowed the group to expand In 1999 Marc Van Montagu retired and Marc Zabeau was appointed head of the department This was a time for change and refocus The newly emerging field of genomics was rapidly becoming tangible in plant sciences with the completion of the sequencing of the Arabidopsis genome The emphasis on plant engineering has now been replaced by a focus on systems approaches to study the basic biological processes in plants where plants represent an interesting and important biological system that contrasts animal life Hence the change in name Plant Systems Biology In 2002 Dirk Inzé became Scientific Director and continues to develop the department as a center of excellence for

  • Growth Rooms
To facilitate high quality plant growth experiments the Department of Plant Systems Biology is equipped with state of the art growth facilities Two modern greenhouses 700 and 760 m² are prominently located on the roof of the east wing of the building Several compartments are fitted with automatic watering systems that allow optimal watering regimes The climate in the compartments is independently controlled Besides heating and ventilation the climate system encompasses humidification and assimilation lights to ensure optimal growth conditions for a range of species year round Inside 20 additional plant growth chambers of 10 to 18 m² provide a wide range of reproducible and uniform growth conditions Adjacent to the greenhouse and growth chambers there are rooms for preparation analysis and harvesting of material Furthermore six in vitro tissue culture rooms of 19 m² each are furnished with three levels of cooled shelves which are subdivided in sections in which the illumination levels can be adjusted independently Prev Next PSB Missions The Department Infrastructure Core Facilities International Projects Publications News Seminars About PSB PSB Missions The Department Infrastructure Core Facilities International Projects Publications News Seminars Research Groups Alain Goossens Lab Ann Depicker Lab Bruno Cammue Lab Daniel Van Damme
