  • Grey trainer: Alpha Jet begins

  • Melsbroek 1964

  • Made in Belgium...Back to France

  • Emergency Landing
    at Gosselies the pilot having inadvertently ejected the canopy Seeing the photographs and the fresh paint on the aircraft without any squadron markings it had to be a test flight after a major maintenance job at the SABCA facilities at the airport More fear than harm for the pilot and the aircraft which rejoined the airfield without further problems under the kindliness of the firefighters Do note the BA22 benefits

    and equipped with modified radiator to avoid overheating of the engine in the warm climates The aircraft also had modified exhausts compared to the Hawker Audax In addition the aircraft had a reservoir with drinking water and a special survival kit for tropical regions located in the fuselage behind the observer s seat The armament was made up of two 7 7mm machine guns and could carry lightweight bombs 9 kg under the wings The Hawker Hardy s maiden flight was on September 07 1934 and 48 were built including the prototype Belgium received one aircraft through the Force Publique registered K4316 originated from the RAF 237 Rhodesian Squadron It possibly could have been the object of an exchange with a Caudron Pelican to the British Imperial Forces This latter was found damaged in Ethipia K4316 arrived in Belgian hands on May 14th 1941 receiving a camouflage paint with black yellow and red roundels although keeping its RAF code But sadly the career of the aircraft was short lived as it turned over during a landing on May 26th 1941 slightly injuring the crew at the airfield of Gambela Kisangani area in Belgian Congo The K4316 in RAF 237 Rhodesian

  • Gosselies Crash Landing
    the plane was seriously damaged The airplane was repaired and continued to fly with the Fairey company going onto Fairey Aviation Ltd new company name on June 25th 1959 and finally to Westland Aircraft Ltd Fairey Aviation Divison on June 22th 1961 G AHJS flew for this British company untill the end of 1964 and was subsequently sold to Hansair Ltd on January 11th 1965 based at Eastleigh Thereafter on June 22th 1965 she was registrated to Robin Air Ltd and used by the Three Counties Aero Club at Blackbush This would be the end of the operational career as the aircraft was sold on February 01st 1966 to the Lasham company and its airworthiness certificate striked out on May 20th 1966 The registration G AHJS disapeared permanently from the British aeronautical register on July 13th 1973 Pwfu permanently withdrawn from use The plane stayed abandoned at Blackbush from 1966 till 1973 when the remains were bought by the Netheravon company for scrap parts A number of the still useable parts were most likely acquired by the Durney Collection near Andover and used for the DH 89A registered G ALAX To come back on the Fairey company other DH 89A
