    Operating System program As from April 1980 the main radar was replaced two times The first replacement was performed with a General Electric GE592 3D 3D for tri dimentional a radar able to make distinction between civil and military aircraft The performance of the GE radar was a detection capability up to 270 kilometer distance and for an altitude of 8000 meters Later on the GE radar was replaced by a MARCONI S273 able to detect an aircraft at 450 kilometers away at an altitude range that was above 60000 meters Since 1993 the Belgian Air Force and Thales Raytheon company are busy with the SEROS I program The old bunker built in the late 1950 s was left for a modern building where the air controllers could work in realy better circumstances In 2003 the program SEROS I was replaced by the SEROS II This program gave the Belgian Air Force a master role in the Belgian air traffic control This new system is coupled to 10 radars civilian and military and the computerisation of all this information gives a general and automated view of the overall traffic situation and moreover gives insight in the flight plan of each aircraft and the meteorological evolution in real time thanks to the most modern communication systems What an evolution between 1951 and 2011 60 years of Air Traffic Control Center was an unique occasion to open the doors for visitors and shed a light on this unit and the installation including the old control bunker This was also the opportunity to show the high importance of air traffic control and all the systems that ensure the safety of travelling people and the defence of the territory Old pictures of the center exposed to the public Serge Van Heertum The old buncker

  • Indian day & Guinness Book Records
    of 67 tons over a distance of 100 meters by 84 people in weelchairs The organisation behind this event is the association Blijf actief an organisation that strives to help disabled people to keep active in their daily lives The former attempt to break the record failed but the enthousiasm and perseverance to try again made it a succes this year and a well deserved quotation in the Guiness book of records was achieved After the preparation of the towing cables and the loading of the aircraft to get the weight 67 tons the participants took their places Everybody ready Here we go Suddenly after some seconds of extreme tension the plane began moving forward the crowd around and the coaches screaming to encourage the participants no to give up with the goal of achieving the record in sight After a tremendous effort finally the nose wheel passed the 100 meter mark and a few seconds later the main wheels did the same the records was achieved and all participants extremely happy and proud of their performance After official confirmation of the record by a judge time came to open the champagne bottles and celebrate the event by taking some more souvenir pictures For the spectators and journalist alike this was a touching moment that brought up deep admiration for the strong will of these people in their weelchairs to establish what has never been done before They showed that even in a wheelchair with the right amount of will power nothing is impossible More informations about Blijf Actief association 14th edition of the Indian Day at Melsbroek Air Base the well known bikers concentration Bikes and planes under the sun Lockheed C 130H Hercules Lockheed Martin F 16A pilot office could be visited During the event the civilian traffic

  • Snowbirds @ Saint Hubert
    Canadian Forces aerobatic team flying the venerable Canadair CT 114 Tutor Their performance in the sky of Saint Hubert was long overdue and almost didn t happen because of the terrible weather that characterizes the spring of 2011 However in the morning the team was still able to make a short training flight in the grayish air including a pass over the airport During the afternoon around 14 30 take off of the Snowbirds to fly over Mirabel before returning at 15 00 above the airport in Saint Hubert where miraculously the clouds seemed to disappear for the purpose so to say Despite the fact that in some places you could see a few patches of blue sky the team made its presentation to the horizontal band much to the delight of hundreds of cadets gathered on the taxiway Bravo and the old section of runway 18 36 After landing and when the Snowbirds pilots had joined the ENA building for a huge autograph session the flood began So we were very lucky to escape the rain after the magnificent spectacle of the Snowbirds If we could possibly be a little bit disappointed than it s due to the fact the planes of Vintage Wings of Canada Gatineau haven t been able to come because of bad weather Still there was much to be happy about for example the presence of a Boeing CF 18B Hornet of the 425 Squadron of Alouette a Eurocopter AS350B3 AStar of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a replica of a Bleriot XI type military This plane built with attention to details by Pierre Racette in Sainte Hyacinthe should make its first flight shortly after a braking device has been installed at the request of Transport Canada authorities something that Louis Bleriot himself was

  • NATO Tiger Meet 2011
