changed once more to become Control and Reporting Post CRP The Semmerzake control center became of great importance in 1963 with the implementation of a system that eliminates the interference between civilian and military air traffic 10 years later in 1973 this system was transferred to a new and well known institution Eurocontrol But Semmerzake control center remains an important unit especially for the Belgian territorial defense In 1975 the Traffic Coordination Cell TCC was automated thanks to the launch of the SEROS Semmerzake Radar Operating System program As from April 1980 the main radar was replaced two times The first replacement was done by a General Electric GE592 3D 3D for tri dimensional a radar able to make distinction between civil and military aircraft The performance of the GE radar was a detection capability up to 270 kilometer distance and for an altitude of 8000 meters Later on the GE radar was replaced by a MARCONI S273 which is able to detect an aircraft 450 kilometers away at an altitude that is above 60000 meters Since 1993 the Belgian Air Force and Thales Raytheon company are busy with the SEROS I program The old bunker built in the late 1950 s was abandoned for a modern building where the air controllers could work in notably better circumstances In 2003 the program SEROS I was replaced by SEROS II This program gave the Belgian Air Force a master role in the Belgian air traffic control This new system is coupled to 10 radars civilian and military and the computerization of all this information gives a general and automated view of the overall traffic situation and moreover it gives insight in the flight plan of each aircraft as well as the meteorological evolution in real time thanks to the most modern communication systems Police MD 900 and the radar ball in background Serge Van Heertum MBB BO 105 from Germany Serge Van Heertum Aerospatiale AS 355 Ecureuil 2 from the French Air Force Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum Aerospatiale AS 365 F Dauphin from French Navy Serge Van Heertum Eurocopter EC135T1 Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum 3 tail models tail screw fenestron and NOTAR Serge Van Heertum Robinson R44 Serge Van Heertum Aerospatiale Alouette III Belgian Navy Serge Van Heertum The Belgian oast angel Serge Van Heertum Westland Seaking Mk 48 Serge Van Heertum Agusta A109BA Belgian Air Force Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum Robinson R22 The big one Serge Van Heertum and the little one Serge Van Heertum Bell 205A 1 Serge Van Heertum Amazing flying model Serge Van Heertum B Hunter unmaned aircraft from Belgian Air Force 80 UAV squadron Serge Van Heertum Always appreciated by the young generation the F 16 flight simulator Serge Van Heertum Smurf at command Serge Van Heertum Army Piranha IIIc engineering version with shovel buldozer Serge Van Heertum Inside the Piranha Serge Van Heertum Ultima target drone Philip Avonds designed the ULTIMA target drone and the associated production set up

public press presentation of the new demo teams who will represent our national colors on this season s airshows and meetings in Belgium and abroad This tradition has been pursued on this 8th May as the press gathers at Florennes AFB for the presentation of the teams and to get a view on the displays in Belgium The solo display Agusta A109 will be presented by Cpt Avi Filip Shaggy Peremans and Lt Avi Kevin Que20 Beckers This last one replaces Lt avi Igor Craeghs who has returned to a 100 operational state after several years as display pilot However he ll continue to coach the new team Another change took place within the Red Devils Cdt avi Alain Papy Collard has stepped aside as leader and is being replaced by Cdt avi Paul Polle Leys and Lt avi Davy Daffy Verhaeren has taken the place of Cdt Avi Albert Al Baltus This last one is preparing for a career in civil airlines As you can see this team has done a lot of shifting within For his second year Cdt Avi Renaud Grat Thys with his appointed team will present the F 16AM to much delight of its fans all across Europe The program and the figures have been reviewed to offer a more dynamic show with less dead moments dixit Grat Let s wish them all lots of success during the season and congratulate them already for wearing our colors beyond the borders of our country It was also an opportunity for the authorities to present various events organized by the Air Force in Belgium As everyone already knew 2013 will be a year without international meetings for which the reason is the participation of the Belgian Air Force in various operations all over the world As Colonel F Vansina emphasized operations will always receive the highest priority As the organization of an international meeting requires a large infrastructure and lots of personnel which simply aren t available at the moment choices must be made Yes but the famous meeting at Koksijde At this moment the coastal base is in full conversion phase towards the NG 90 which renders its installations and personnel unavailable But as the saying goes you must take a step back to jump further Indeed the Air Force plans ahead on different levels to return full force in the year of the centenary of WW1 As another saying goes wait and see the future will be bright This doesn t prevent the Air Force to publicly announce that they ll go to Semmerzake where you can approach and get to know the world of ATCC Air Traffic Control Centre The Air Force also will go to Florennes where we can admire our F 16 s and discover what happens around the plane as well The last highlight will be the open doors weekend at Melsbroek AFB The base will be open to the public to celebrate its 65 year existence and emphasize the 40

  • Aero Iceland
Lake Myvatn Lake of the flies located on the north side of the island we were promised a change of scenery with perfect light conditions for taking aerial photographs Unfortunately a windy storm started in the center of the island which lasted three days kept the aircraft on the ground With 90 knots crosswind we were not allowed to see the geothermal activity from the sky In consolation the pilot gave us a tour of the hangar that day A shared passion opens doors easily You can see on their website what we missed that day www myflug is Sadly I couldn t stay in the same place any longer but it is possible to do the same kind of sightseeing tours almost everywhere in Iceland Along a trip in Iceland some wreckage can be seen like a DC 3 of the U S Navy who touched down after a fuel problem on the east coast or a Russian Antonov who landed on the airfield Eyri and never left due to technical damage and a C 117 D of the U S Navy The two last are stored in the Hnjotur Egill Ólafsson located in the fjords in the southwest

  • Italian week @ Florennes
deployed to Belgium to make some air ground and reconnaissance practice missions in the Eiffel area in the South West of Germany The aircraft were seen operating from Florennes in two waves A first one was lauched in the morning and a second mission was planned in the afternoon The missions duration was about 1h40 On Monday April 15 one of the home based F 16BM encountered a little problem and the runway was closed for a while Because of that the 4 Tornados coming back from their afternoon mission were put in a holding pattern until 3 of them were finally cleared to land while the last one seemed to have been diverted to Beauvechain The sunny weather during the beginning of the second week gave the opportunity to make some interresting pictures of those visitors One of them Tornado MM7028 50 52 was wearing and old green grey camouflage scheme and returned back to Italy on Monday April 15 It was replaced by the Tornado MM7053 50 07 50 Stormo MM7051 50 45 MM7053 50 07 arrived on April 15 switched with MM7028 50 52 camo returned back to Italy MM7054 50 40 MM7055 50 42 MM7066 50
