  • SPA the return
1976 airshow at Spa Serge Van Heertum In 1968 three Piper Super Cubs were bought in the US Domains of Mayence The responsables of the aeroclub even created a patrol on the Cubs named the Green Devils in 1969 two more planes enter service A Rallye MS 892 and a Cessna 205 the first five seater of the club In 1972 the fleet consists of Pipers for the pilots and Cessna for the skydivers Radionavigation became more and more advanced and the Pipers lacking an electrical installation couldn t follow the general aviation evolution and thanks in part to standardization a switch to almost exclusively Cessna is forced This is why in the 70 s and 80 s the following Cessna s were bought Cessna 150 152 172 207 and 206 The last ones were even present with 3 models of which two for the parachute jumps five jumpers per plane and the third one for travelling and professional education The latest events were Fly In s Gathering classical airplanes ancestors of the road and side animation all had a part in the reputation of the club and the sheer number of people In 2009 the club organized a major event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of aviation at Spa A grand event and a complete success All goes well for this dynamic club and often mentioned as a must for sports aviation and parachute lovers The Piper Cub era at Spa this one is still based there Unfortunately the winds of change passed in January 2013 when the aerodrome was threatened with complete closure The decision to close the airfield was taken by the only Sowaer site manager and the decision to decline the permit by minister Philippe Henry was completely false given the fact that the airfield of Spa has been operating without license since 2006 without anyone worrying about it The airfield costs some 500 000 euros per year to Sowaer under supervision of Minister André Antoine CDH and its viability is in danger in absence of an investment plan compatible with the interests of Spadel the society of waters of Spa who provides 25 of the budget of Spa being 5 million euros per year This last one was opposed to any increase of activity at the airfield fencing with possible pollution of their water extraction points especially in case of a crash but especially to protect its reputation About 40 jobs at the airfield 700 for the other one do the math Let s not forget that the pollution aspect in case of a crash has never been studied nor proven by science The closure became effective and quickly action was taken amongst others several petitions that have circulated in the aviation world of Belgium but even abroad as the airfield was often used by foreign pilots passing through At the beginning of April the sun reappeared above the airfield as the announcement of reopening its installations was made The water captation protected area s

combined with a natural reserve Certain associations for preservation of natural environments use the shooting range of around 2200 ha to reinstate fauna and flora threatened with extinction Equipped with a control tower the shooting range has its own control over the airplanes as soon as they enter the airspace over the area Mark that as with any military domain and the potential danger caused by the exercises public access is strictly prohibited Until some weeks ago the division of the practicing time slots was as follows 40 Belgian F 16 40 USAF A 10 who were stationed in Germany until end of June 2013 20 Alpha Jet Faé A109 Faé F 16 KLU Mirage Armée de l Air The Defense Bomb Squad DOVO SEDEE also uses the installations to let explode ammunition found in the four corners of Belgium and sometimes abroad This team uses two different parcels on the range one for the conventional explosive munitions and the other for the surface products like black powder or phosphoric items napalm bombs It s however 25 0 tons they let explode every year impressive At last the terrain is also used by some companies such as FN at Herstal or the Forges of Zeebrugge to do projectile and ammunition tests The 3rd of July 2013 Pampa Range was celebrating its 60th birthday and it was an excellent opportunity to watch some F 16 or Agusta in action or met some friends of nature for who the terrain is a place where nature and its preservation are very present This demonstrates that nature and technology aren t incompatible worlds SBAP would like to thanks Kleine Brogel IPR team Els and Erwin for the invitation and the facilities during this report The entrance show explicitely that you enter on a shooting

  • Phantom Pharewell
at first the visitors were welcomed by a very unpleasant drizzle who luckily gave way to some sunrays during the remainder of the day A long walk through the base gave a rewarding look at several beautiful machines on static display with several special decorations Along the course all kinds of stands allowed for a snack or quenching your thirst while others provided badges and other aeronautical memorabilia The most frequent stand was the one where you could obtain all sorts of gadgets from a coffee cup or a book about the history of the Phantom at JG71 and even keychains or scale models The general public started to gather by the fences as the day advanced making sure they wouldn t miss a thing Around noon several passes by a Boeing Stearman a yak 52 and a MBB 105 were made The JG51 wearing the glorious name Richthofen was about the fly a red triplane but a very strong wind inhibited that flight The surprise act of the day was without a doubt an A 4N Skyhawk of BAE Systems based at Wittmund After several passings an emergency landing procedure was initiated following a landing gear problem The A 4N landed on the other side of the runway to execute an arresting hook landing Simply impressive Was this an exercise or a true procedure nobody knows After a break the grand moment was there Four Phantoms of which three were decorated did a long long taxi alongside the audience Then they took off to do a combination of formation and solo passes Let s not forget that demonstrations are prohibited in Germany since the catastrophe of Ramstein The Phantom Phormation was then rejoined by two Typhoons the new spearheads of the Luftwaffe The two Typhoons wore the colors of

and associations dedicated to sports aviation pilot school parachuting sail planes ULM Air festival We often look far and wide to go to a good meeting and as everybody knows meetings across the Channel are a must So we often cross the Channel to see a Warbird in flight that was still missing in our photograph collection This article proves that you don t always have to look far to take some pictures of a Yak a P40 named Little Jeanne a Fieseler Storch an attack by the T 6 Harvard look at some aerobatics by the good old Stampe SV 4 or even admire 2 rare elegant Beech Staggerwings And all these are only the oldies The show allows us to see the evolution of aerobatics in the Pitts and a CAP 230 Let s not forget a remarkable SAR demo by one of our Seakings of the 40 th squadron of Koksijde The meeting ended in culmination with the Patrouille Cartouche Doré the mini Patrouille de France with their blue and gold Epsilon We can qualify this show as a familiar convivial and superbly organized by the SIGAL Syndicat Intercommunal pour la Gestion de l Aéroport de Loisir de Lille and often goes by unnoticed but after visiting some shows at Valenciennes Lens or St Quentin last year the desire to visit another event in the North of France quickly made its appearance The people of the North know to great pleasure of the aeronautics lovers how to talk about aviation organize shows and especially how to welcome a passionate audience With a static show of about 50 airplanes demonstrations by the Gendarmerie Marine Air Force or Police stands the organizers had also thought about children animation and historical expositions To conclude those who visited the show have
