    the American aviation The base became one of the bases of the 9th US Air Force and designated Advanced Landing Ground A 96 Toul Ochey Airfield on August 29th The 50 th Fighter Group took up residence on November 03rd 1944 with its three P 47D Thunderbolt squadrons Another unit the 415th Night Fighter Squadron of the 12th US Air Force with Bristol Beaufighters followed from November 1944 till March 1945 executing fighter missions by night against the Luftwaffe After the truce the base became a gathering place for the captured German airplanes within the frame of Operation Lusty Various jet and propeller planes were transported and stocked at Ochey before being convoyed to Cherbourg and embarked bound for the United States Operation Lusty ended progressively by the end of 1945 and the Americans started to evacuate their personal and material The base was handed back to France on November 05th During the first years of the cold war the French government made the base of Ochey available to the US Air Force as a dispersion airfield for its France based units within the NATO framework Substantial works were executed in 1950 the concrete runway 07 25 damaged during the war was destructed and to be able to take in the new jet driven aircraft a new asphalt runway of 8000 ft 2 434 meters was build Hardened shelters set out circularly set out said like a daisy were erected Two daisies are located on the north end of the runway and one on the south Each daisy made up of 15 to 18 shelters with one or two aircraft per shelter regrouped around a central hangar From 1961 on the base will welcome the first jet aircraft the Mystère IVA On January 12 1962 the base was officially denominated Base Aérienne 133 BA 133 and named base Commandant Henry Jeandet fighter and ace pilot of the second war In 1967 the 3 ème Escadre took its quarters in the Lorraine region made up of three squadrons equipped with the prestigious Mirage IIIE A little bit later one of the squadrons was equipped with the Jaguar instead of the Mirage and took part in various operational missions in Africa Since June 1995 the 3 ème Escadre is disbanded making place for three operational squadrons flying the Mirage 2000D spearhead of the combat aviation Each squadron has a designated hangar shelter and are the Escadron de Chasse 1 3 Navarre the Escadron de Chasse 2 3 Champagne the Escadron de Chasse 3 3 Ardennes and finally added the Escadron de Transformation Mirage 2000D 2 7 Argonne later on The Mirage 2000D is the first fighter aircraft of the Armée de l Air with all weather capability and in 1997 a flight simulator was installed on site on the base From 1999 on the Mirage 2000D came to know real operations in ex Yougoslavia and in particular in Kosovo airspace In 2003 a batch of 2000D was set up at D Jamena

  • Duxford Flying Legend
    B the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and of course all the roaring machines of the Fighter Collection without forgetting the warbirds from Austria Swiss or France The flying program totalised around fourty airplanes and was magnificent as always particularly the traditional finale putting in the air most of the fighters that flew during the day Called the Balbo taken from the famous Italian aviator Italo Balbo which flew two transatlantic flights grouping quite a lot of airplanes For the first one flying 12 Savoia Marchetti S 55 flying boats and for the second one flying no less than 24 of these aircraft Nowadays the term Balbo entered common usage describing a large formation of at least twelve aircraft But let s cut the cackle and move on to the pictures summarizing these two days We do hope these pictures will convince you to cross the Channel see some English countryside and enjoy the show of these machines from another era and all of this at an airbase filled with history which can not be forgotten The SBAP team heartily thanks the organizers and the Imperial War Museum for this memorable weekend and particularly Ms Esther Blaine public relation manager and her team for the accreditations and cordial reception of our members during the Flying Legends 2014 We eagerly await the 2015 edition Last checks before the great show Serge Van Heertum The star of the Flying Legends 2014 coming from California Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum A British legend the Spitfire exhibed with some armaments and material Serge Van Heertum Some beautiful flying models Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum Serge Van Heertum Unique collector book edited This unique collector s item contains 29 characterized images of past and present Legendary figures who have been and are closely associated to The Fighter Collection This is a limited edition run of 300 copies which have been signed and numbered by the artist More information and details of how to order one of these collector s items http fighter collection com cft product flying legends volume 1 The Fighter Collection In 1970 Stephen Grey an English businessman living in Swiss and former RAF pilot wanted to acquire a warbird As Supermarine Spitfire his dream was very rare at that time he decided to buy a more available one a P 51D Mustang He found one at Placerville California at Robert MacFarlane s place Entirely painted in red with a white striping having taken part in the Reno air races wearing the number 7 and called Candyman The aircraft convoyed by late John Crocker flew from Oakland to Geneva in several legs and when arriving on Swiss soil was the first stone of The Fighter Collection TFC museum Followed by a F8F 2P Bearcat in June 1981 a FM 2 Wildcat the next year In the meantime Stephen Grey realised his dream finding a two seater Spitfire Mk IXT with an American Senator but which to the contrary

    in during the weekend This attracted some interesting visitors such as a notable RAF presence with a Tornado GR 4 and two Hawks It is great that the RAF still keeps its connection with Ursel or better with B 67 as the airfield was designated during the stay of the 2 Tactical Air Force in 1944 lively What follows is an impression of the flying activity on Saturday Tornado GR

  • DAX Helicopter Fair
    with a Dauphin of the Service Public and various civil aircraft like an Antonov 2 now based at the civil end of Dax airbase two superb Alouette II a Hughes 300 and a Cabri The stormy weather hampered the demonstration flights and others like the flight of the drone of the GIGN Groupe d Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale had to be cancelled But in return I have to say that for the pictures it was interesting humid but interesting Together with the demo s people could have a first flight in an Ecureuil of Heli Bearn or have a go on the EC 120 flight simulator without forgetting the nice exhibition of plastic models The airbase of Dax have also a superb helicopter museum which every passionate should visit at least once see SBAP page http www sbap be museum dax dax htm My only regret was the non attendance of a NH90 but the airbase of the ALAT Aviation Légère de l Armée de Terre at Le Luc in the south east of France had also an open door this same weekend Satellite view of Dax airfield Google earth Piper L 18C Cub Belgian Navy Aerospatiale SA 316B

    equip the Belgian Air Force and which led to the sale of the century He was sent to Edwards airbase California to be trained on this new fighter aircraft and took part in the training of the first Belgian pilots as the first Commanding Officer CO of the Operational Conversion Unit OCU at Beauvechain airbase He was also the first Belgian F 16 demo pilot within the Eur o pean airshow scene and had the honour to present the F 16 to king Baudouin Jozef De Heyn ended his career as the Belgian defence attaché in the United States of America with the rank of Brigade General His funeral ceremony took place on July 11 2014 at the 10 Tactical Wing located at the Kleine Brogel airbase Limburg province Presentation of the new F 16A to King Baudouin by Jozef De Heyn Coll SBAP In Memoriam General ER Pieter Piet De Groof 1931 2014 Pieter De Groof alias Walter Korum was born at Mechelen on May 16th 1931 Aviation enthusiast he did polytechnician studies and entering the Belgian Air Force as pilot and was graduated withe the 133 promotion on October 18th 1957 He was undoubtedly the most paradoxal figure

    Air Force moved from Værløse Air Base near Copenhagen and Vandel Air Base in southern Jutland to Karup Air Base In 1993 the Army Operational Command was placed at the air base also Wings and units RDAF Helicopter Wing Karup Esk 722 EH101 Mk512 Esk 723 Super Lynx Mk90B Esk 724 AS550C2 Fennec RDAF Flyveskolen FLSK Saab T 17 Supporter RDAF Air Control Wing RDAF Combat Support Wing RDAF Specialist School RDAF Training Centre RDAF Expeditionary Air Staff An old Draken as ggate guardian with the current squadron insigna Making a trip to Karup was a unique opportunity to see the Danish Air Force in action and have a look at their modern fleet The Danish Air Force is a small force but takes part into NATO operations with a great determination and is an important link in the northern European defence chain This airshow was also the occasion to see the interest they put in historical planes like the Douglas C 47A the former trainer aircraft Chipmunk and the locally produced SAI KZ IV all preserved in flying conditions Foreign visitors were of course a Swedish Saab J 39C and a Finnish F 18C from the neighboring countries German Luftwaffe Typhoon and Czech L 159 were also present during this sunny and windy airshow Decidedly the stars of the show were coming from the US Two Boeing F 18F from the US Navy came to this show as a first step towards a European promotional tour Both aircraft are foreseen to attempt the airshows of Fairford and Farnborough in the UK but will also spent a week 30 6 until 04 07 in Belgium at Florennes air base This will happen due to the desire of Belgian authorities to launch the replacement of the F 16 s We already

  • Wings Parade 2014
    flying personnel non pilot 1W 15W and BKoks the training of the meteorlogists Meteo Wing the training of air traffic controllers ATCC and CRC the training of the UAV operators 80 Sqn UAV This Wings Parade was also particular as the godfather of the pilots promotion is Baudouin Carpentier de Changy April 07 1931 JUly 17 1960 Wilfried Wif De Brouwer gave a brief overview of his dedication and sacrifice during the conflict in Congo in 1960 Baudouin Carpentier de Changy started his flying career with the 128 Promotion at Goetsenhoven After graduation he flew Hawker Hunters with the 7 Wing at Chièvres and in June 1960 he was appointed with the the Fire Assistance Flights FAF in Belgian Congo On July 11 1960 flying his armed Harcard T 6 he was on a mission overhead Matadi protecting the evacuation of Belgian compatriots when one of his fellow pilots was downed by ennemy fire The pilot managed to land his airplane in the vicinity of the airfield Baudouin saw his colleague escaping on foot and without hesitation he landed his Harvard on the runway at Matadi picked up his colleague and took off before the rebels could react On July 17 1960 he escorted an helicopter bound to evacuate some fugitives about 200 km southwest of Leopoldville The mission commander decided to let the Harvard loiter out of sight and so Baudouin made a reconnaissance overhead the Inkisi riverbridge He was fired upon by anti aircraft defence and had to make an emergency landing Although he survived the landing he was assassinated on scene by the rebels The helicopter crew who landed to pick up the refugees was captured and also murdered without any further notice The aircraft flown by Baudouin Carpentier de Changy was the armed Harvard T 6
